Ready for Spring Flowers

I’m keeping an eye on the daffodils in my yard and they are just about to bloom. For now here is a picture I took in January when I spent a few days in Charleston. The bright cheery window boxes of flowers were perfect and I hope to see more fresh spring flowers very soon!

December Visit to Chicago

Last week I went to Chicago and visited the Christmas Market. After I bought a hot chocolate at one of the refreshment stands it was time to see some of the items for sale.

It was a warm day for December so I decided to walk to Macy’s on State Street. It was so festive outside and inside!

This was truly a wonderful day… Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Scenes from a Flower Show

Since there won’t be any outdoor flowers until spring I thought I’d share some of my pictures of the Philadelphia Flower Show from a couple of years ago. The year I went there was a snowstorm but since the show was indoors it didn’t matter. It was a wonderful reminder that spring was coming and so were the flowers!

I’d like to go back again soon and see more colorful flowers…

More Souvenir Postcards

I’m hoping to travel soon and for inspiration I’ve been looking at postcards from places I’ve been over the past few years. Here are some from my collection. It will be wonderful to see them again!

And here’s one from my hometown – Lexington, Massachusetts.

Many adventures await…

Lake Michigan in September

A visit to Lake Michigan on a sunny and windy afternoon was perfect for late September. Lots of people walked on the beach and the pier to the lighthouse. The spray from the waves got people (including me) a little wet!

This seagull disregards the sign.

It was a lovely day to spend at the beach while it is still warm…

Farmers Market

I live near a farmers market and now that autumn is approaching there are lots of seasonal things for sale like pumpkins, mums, apple cider and bouquets of flowers. It was sunny and warm yesterday when I went to the market and I saw these cheerful displays.

It will be difficult deciding which pumpkin(s) to take home!

A Second Year of Meggie’s Adventures Begins

It’s the first anniversary of Meggie’s Adventures! Last September I started this blog to write about all my favorite things: travel, ice cream (and gelato), flowers, going to the beach, and collecting postcards. Many of the stories take place when I was young, which is why the blog is called Meggie’s Adventures. But as I like to point out, I still love ice cream, flowers and travel so that hasn’t changed!

My first post was A Family Day at the Beach when we used to go to the beach in Maine. It’s been wonderful having this blog and I’m looking forward to a second year of fun adventures.

In Search of Gelato

When I go to Italy one of my favorite things is to try new flavors of gelato. On my last visit I decided to go to gelato shops everywhere I went to see which one I liked the best. It wasn’t easy but since I challenged myself I went to lots of places to do this important research.

Later I decided I could never say who has the best gelato. I realized that I enjoyed a refreshing gelato from a stand near the Vatican just as much as one from a specialty shop in Venice. There was a Nutella and hazelnut combination in San Gimignano I’ll never forget. It was delicious and I nearly went back for a second one immediately. Another flavor I really enjoyed was crème brulee. It was so tasty I momentarily forgot to admire the beautiful scenery.

An important thing to remember about the gelato in Italy is the portions are quite small. I usually bought the smallest size, which was surprisingly satisfying. I’d buy it in a cone, but many people seemed to prefer cups. I’d also get one of those tiny spoons to try to make it last longer.

When I go back to Italy I’ll have to think of another important subject -like chocolate – to research!

Beach Days

Meggie’s family used to take weekend trips to Maine to go to the beach.  When they got close to the water she always rolled down her car window to smell the crisp and salty ocean air.  This was one of Meggie’s favorite childhood memories, along with collecting shells in her pail and building castles (with moats).  These pictures from the coast of Maine are reminders of the excitement of that first scent of the ocean.

Souvenir Postcards

Postcards are wonderful souvenirs of places I’ve visited. Since it’s been a while since I’ve traveled they’ve become even more special. These are postcards from some of my favorite places.

Here’s where I looked for postcards in Maine.

I hope it won’t be long before I can start collecting them again!
